Public Invited to Human Rights Presentation Nov. 21

On November 16, 2011September 27, 2023
--

SINSINAWA — As the Dominican Order celebrates 500 years of preaching in the Americas, the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters invite people to commemorate this important anniversary with them at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at Sinsinawa Mound.

The program will focus on the past and present human rights issues challenging the Dominican Family in America. The program includes insight into the life of Friar Antonio Montesinos, OP, who was the first Dominican to speak out in the Americas against injustices experienced by natives in Hispaniola (current-day Haiti and Dominican Republic) at the hands of Spanish colonists 500 years ago.

A panel discussion on issues such as immigration, racism, military spending, and poverty will follow. This presentation will also be available as a live Webcast at www.sinsinawa.org/live. Online viewers are encouraged to e-mail questions to [email protected] during the presentation.

The Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters invite people to learn more about their ministries by visiting their web site at www.sinsinawa.org. The Sinsinawa Dominicans are part of a worldwide Dominican family, the Order of Preachers. For over 800 years, Dominicans have continued to preach the Gospel in word and deed. Today, thousands of Sisters, nuns, priests, Brothers, associates, and laity minister in more than 110 countries around the world.
