Fr. Tom Schroeder dies

MADISON — A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Fr. Thomas Schroeder, pastor emeritus of the Diocese of Madison, at St. Martin of Tours Church, 5959 St. Martin Cir., Cross Plains (Martinsville), on Friday, Nov. 14,  at 11:30 a.m.

Bishop Robert C. Morlino, Bishop of Madison, will be the celebrant with Very Reverend Fr. Tait Schroeder, Judicial Vicar and nephew of Father Schroeder, as homilist.  Interment will take place immediately following the Mass at the St. Martin of Tours Parish cemetery, with the Rite of Committal presided by Father Schroeder.

A luncheon will be served at the parish hall following interment at the cemetery. Visitation at St. Martin of Tours Church will be held on Friday, Nov. 14, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Father Schroeder, 76, died on Saturday, Nov. 8, at St. Mary Care Center, Madison.  He was born on January 16, 1938, to Dr. Andrew John and Hazel Catherine (Dresen) Schroeder of Sauk City.

Father Schroeder attended St. Aloysius Grade School in Sauk City, and completed six years of minor seminary study for the priesthood at Queen of Apostles Seminary in Madison.  He completed his major seminary studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he also completed his theological studies with a Licentiate in Sacred Theology. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop William P. O’Connor, Bishop of Madison, on May 30, 1964.

Father Schroeder served as a parochial vicar at St. Patrick Parish, Madison and St. Andrew Parish, Verona, with mission to St. William Parish, Paoli.  He served as pastor at St. Philomena Parish, Belmont, with mission to St. Michael Parish, Calamine, and Immaculate Conception Parish, Truman; St. Martin of Tours Parish, Martinsville; St. Mary of the Most Holy Rosary Parish, Pardeeville, with mission to St. Andrew Parish, Buffalo; and St. Joseph Parish, Argyle, with mission to St. Michael Parish, Yellowstone.

He also served the diocese as a faculty member at Holy Name Seminary, Madison; Director of the Apostolate to the Deaf, member of the Presbyteral Council, Executive Secretary of the Office of Conciliation and Arbitration, and member of the Office of Clergy Development.

He is survived by sisters, Jill Volkman and Monica (William) Hellenbrand, and brother, Tim (Darlene) Schroeder.
