MADISON — St. Mary’s Hospital’s cornerstone was laid 100 years ago on October 8, 1911.
On Saturday, Oct. 8, the hospital celebrated the laying of that cornerstone by handing out free apples — a cornerstone of good health — throughout Dane County.
At 12 locations in Madison, Middleton, DeForest, Waunakee, Sun Prairie, Oregon, and McFarland, people could stop to receive their free fruit. And in the spirit of good food safety practice, the hospital also handed out free fruit wipes along with the apples.

The apples event is the first of many centennial celebrations taking place throughout 2012 as St. Mary’s commemorates its 100th anniversary. The hospital opened its doors in September of 1912.
The St. Mary’s campus includes an outpatient surgery center and an employee childcare center. St. Mary’s also operates an off-site Adult Day Health Center, is part owner of a home health care organization, and is affiliated with the St. Mary’s Care Center (skilled nursing facility) on Madison’s southwest side.
