Surrendering to God

A favorite book I have written about several times in this column is Abandonment to Divine Providence by Fr. Jean-Pierre de Caussade, a French Jesuit priest who served as spiritual director to a cloistered community of Nuns.

Dead Theologians Society prepares to celebrate 25 years

“Don’t wait until you are too old to start becoming a saint.” That’s a quote from St. Josemaria Escriva, and it is contained in the new book, Wisdom & Inspiration from the Saints in a Sentence, recently released by the Dead Theologians Society (DTS).

Fr. Donald Lange publishes book

PLATTEVILLE — “I think it was in the late 1970s that I submitted a few articles to the Catholic Herald,” said Fr. Donald Lange, speaking about how his column — “Seeing with Jesus’ Eyes” — got started. His new book Seeing with Jesus’ Eyes — A Seasonal Reader was just published in December of 2020. “At first, I wondered in the Catholic Herald would accept my articles, but gradually, they did.”

What began as an occasional guest column eventually became something more regularly published in the paper.

“After I retired, Pam Payne asked me if I would offer a name for the column,” he said, speaking of the Herald’s now retired associate editor. “That was about 14 years ago.”

The coronavirus and sitting quietly in a room alone

Blaise Pascal said, “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.”

The great 17th Century philosopher thought that most of us, most of the time, distract ourselves from what truly matters through a series of divertissements (diversions).

He was speaking from experience. Though one of the brightest men of his age and one of the pioneers of the modern physical sciences and of computer technology, Pascal frittered away a good deal of his time through gambling and other trivial pursuits.

‘Battle of the Books’ in Waunakee

WAUNAKEE — When a school gym is home to a raucous environment, high energy from students and parents, and spirited competition, one would naturally assume a sporting event is taking place.

During a recent morning at St. John the Baptist School in Waunakee, all of those efforts were not about sports — they were about books.

As a culmination of a year’s worth of reading, more than 70 students in grades three to six took part in the Battle of the Books, based on a national event where students from different schools read books and compete against each other in knowledge contests based on those books.

Dorothy Day’s granddaughter visits Madison

MADISON — “If you’re admiring my grandmother, you’re not paying attention.”

Those were strong words said by the granddaughter of Dorothy Day, but perhaps true meaning one shouldn’t focus on the women herself, but the work that needs to be done, and what that means for you in your life.

Day is known for being a driving force behind the Catholic Worker Movement, which tackled issues of social justice. Day’s cause for sainthood is underway with her currently being designated as a “Servant of God”.

Make this Christmas a ‘silent night’

This column is the bishop’s communication with the faithful of the Diocese of Madison. Any wider circulation reaches beyond the intention of the bishop.

Dear Friends,

The Book of Wisdom, Chapter 18, verse 14 says, “For while gentle silence enveloped all things, and night in its swift course was now half gone, Your all powerful word leapt from heaven, from the royal throne.”

It is a beautiful prophecy of the night of our Lord’s Birth. That’s why it’s the introit from the Sunday within the Octave of Christmas and it is a biblical reference, along with others, which give context to the beautiful Christmas hymn, “Silent Night.” Silence is part of the essential clothing, if you will, of Christmas.

The power of silence

Robert Cardinal Sarah, the Prefect for Divine Worship, has written a beautiful new book about the power of silence. Unfortunately, it is only available in French for now.
