MADISON — Our Lady of Hope Clinic and the Women’s Care Center are partnering in a “Celebration of Life” with the event to benefit both organizations on Friday, April 20, at the Madison Concourse Hotel, 1 W. Dayton St.

The benefit, now in its fifth year, will begin with cocktails at 5:30 p.m. and will feature Steve “Homer” True, from ESPN radio, as the emcee of an evening of Luxury Bingo, with bingo, auction, and raffle prizes ranging from fine dining at some of the area’s best restaurants, to a round of golf for four at the historic Maple Bluff Country Club, and a week stay at a four bedroom mountain home in Estes Park.

Sacred Hearts School holds personal care items drive

SUN PRAIRIE — For the seventh year, Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary School in Sun Prairie held a personal care drive to help fill a local food pantry’s need for those items.

This year, students were asked to “Cram the Cart” in the school entryway with items such as deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, diapers, laundry detergent, dish soap, and other personal care items.

By the last day of the drive, the large cart was overflowing, with bags and boxes surrounding it.

Support for an elderly parent living alone

Q My siblings and I are working together to help my father who is in his 80s and living in the family home.

We have decided to do as much as we can to help him live out his years in the home he loves. The issue is that we are now four months into this and we are having some major disagreements about what it means to support him.

Navigating a complicated health system

Q I am trying to be an advocate for my mother who has some health issues and I feel as though we are getting lost in this complicated health care system.

I have permission to be with her during the frequent visits to the numerous specialists she must see. It seems when I bring up a concern, all we get is another series of tests, a trial for a different medication, or a referral to yet another specialist.

My mother does not want to keep seeing new physicians and repeating the same information all over again. She does not understand all of this “fussing” and would just like to be comfortable.

Shocked out of complacency: Abortions only at Planned Parenthood

Guest Column

I must make an embarrassing confession: I am a complacent pro-lifer.

I never thought of myself this way, but it is true. And I have proof.

Abortions only

Beginning May 2, 2016, the Planned Parenthood abortion facility on Madison’s east side began providing only abortion services; it will no longer provide screenings or dispense contraceptives.

Signs indicating a senior may need help

Ask Jean by Jean Mueller column logo

Q As a follow-up to your column last month, I am a long distance caregiver as well.

Although my mother tells me repeatedly that she is doing well, I need some specific things to look for when I visit her later this month.

What should I notice to give me a better idea for how well she is caring for herself? (From a daughter in Beloit)

Perinatal hospice: Comforting infants and families

Eye on the Capitol by Barbara Sella

Legislative hearings are valuable means of educating the public. During a June 2 hearing in the State Capitol for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (companion bills Senate Bill 179 and Assembly Bill 237), those present learned about a little-known but invaluable program known as perinatal hospice.

The bills would protect unborn children at and after 20 weeks from painful abortions and would require that families be informed about perinatal hospice. (Governor Scott Walker signed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act into law on July 20.)

Encyclical is prophetic, challenging, wonderful

It’s courageous, it’s prophetic, it’s challenging, it’’ holistic, it’s wonderful: That’s what I think of Pope Francis’ environmental encyclical Laudato Si’, on Care for Our Common Home.

Quoting his patron saint, Francis of Assisi — who is also the patron saint of ecology — Pope Francis begins his papal letter with a beautiful verse from the saint’s Canticle of the Creatures: “‘Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with colored flowers and herbs.'”

Our common home

“St. Francis of Assisi reminds us,” writes the pope, “that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. . . .
