As Transitional Deacon Grant Thies proclaimed those words at the end of the Chrism Mass on March 27 at St. Maria Goretti Church in Madison, he meant more than just a dismissal.

What a wonderful day to be together, preparing to celebrate the great mysteries of our redemption and actually initiating those mysteries in our celebration on Sunday, Palm Sunday, and again tonight.
Chrism Mass at St. Maria Goretti
MADISON — In the Diocese of Madison, the Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Holy Tuesday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m., at St. Maria Goretti Church, 5313 Flad Ave.

Chrism Mass is night of blessings and promises
Bishop Robert C. Morlino of Madison thanked people from throughout the Diocese of Madison for coming to the annual “holy night” of the Chrism Mass held at St. Maria Goretti Church on March 22.

It was an hour before Mass and the parking lot at St. Maria Goretti Church in Madison was already filling up.
It was a familiar sight that both spring and Holy Week have arrived.

MADISON — In the Diocese of Madison, the Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Holy Tuesday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Maria Goretti Church, 5313 Flad Ave.
Bishop Robert C. Morlino will be the principal celebrant with priests of the diocese concelebrating.
At the Mass, oils to be used during the coming year are blessed, including the Oils of the Sick, of Catechumens, and of Chrism. Chrism is a mixture of oil of olives and balsam specially blessed by the bishop, to be used in sacraments and the consecration of churches and particular items and vessels.

When I was studying liturgy, there was a running joke with both teachers and students — “If you don’t know the answer to a question, write down that it is a mystery” (because so much of our faith is a mystery — something which we will never understand completely in this life).
The mysteries of our faith are not like the mysteries we read. They are not a puzzle to be figured out if offered enough clues but rather realities that need to be lived and that each of us reflect upon.
