Buying local food is a healthy choice

When I was growing up, my family always had a large vegetable garden. Since my father was a teacher, he generally had more time in the summer to work in the garden. And I enjoyed helping him.

We also had relatives who lived on farms, whom we often visited and assisted with gardening and chores. So I had instilled in me a love of the outdoors and appreciation for nature and fresh food.

Following in St. Isidore’s footsteps

When I was growing up, I spent many weeks during the summer on my grandmother’s farm. I have good memories of those days spent outside in the fresh air, experiencing farm life.

My father, who was a teacher, helped out on the farm during the summer. I was able to help in small ways, too, such as gathering eggs in the hen house and pulling weeks in the garden.

Mary’s Rosary Garden celebrates Fatima

MINERAL POINT — Mary’s Rosary Garden located on the Wiesbrook Farm near Mineral Point will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mary’s appearance at Fatima with a Mass on Saturday, May 13, at 1 p.m.

The Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13; Thursday, July 13; Sunday, Aug. 13; Wednesday, Sept. 13; and Friday, Oct. 13. Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m.

Second in a series on the Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens.

MADISON — Scripture readings often come to mind for Msgr. James Uppena, a retired priest residing at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish who serves as a co-leader with Dick Reynolds at the Schulte Garden on the Hershberger property.

It is part of the Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens, which include 17 different gardens.

St. Vincent de Paul volunteer opportunities for young adults

MADISON — The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is offering the Madison Catholic young adult community opportunities to grow in faith and meet others through service.

Help in the Lacy Garden

All young adults are invited to help plant, weed, harvest, and dig in the Lacy Garden from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday evenings.

The garden, at 5897 Whalen Rd. in Fitchburg, provides more than 20,000 pounds of fresh produce for the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry each year.
