St. Thomas More Society focuses on Abraham Lincoln

MADISON — Abraham Lincoln is more a legend than a real person to many people. His famous speeches, his efforts to hold the Union together, and his untimely death overshadow the man who honed his skills as a circuit-riding attorney in Illinois.

At the next meeting of the St. Thomas More Society in the Diocese of Madison, attorney John Skilton will present highlights from “Abraham Lincoln: A Lawyer for the Ages.”

Skilton is an author, lecturer, and leader in the legal community. He has practiced law for 43 years and has given back to the community by serving on the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association as well as serving as president of the State Bar of Wisconsin.

St. Ambrose Academy to present Annie

VERONA — Students, staff, and volunteers at St. Ambrose Academy are gearing up to present another musical production.

After last year’s successful and award-winning production of Beauty and the Beast, the school is putting the finishing touches on the family favorite Annie.

This year’s musical will again have a live orchestra as part of the full-length version of the production.

The website for the recent Broadway production describes Annie as the story of a lovable orphan, the title character, who goes on a spirited journey with next-to-nothing at an orphanage and finds her ideal family with big-hearted billionaire Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul forming new Youth Service Council

MADISON — The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) has long been involved with charitable works in the Madison area. Following in its founder’s footsteps, the society is now looking to expand opportunities for youth to take the reins in planning some local service events.

“Blessed Frederic Ozanam and his friends started the society when they were college students, and they named it after St. Vincent de Paul,” explained Gayle Westfahl, member services coordinator for the local council of the society. “We all know there are very talented high school students here in Madison, and many people could be served well through their creativity, passion, and desire to be of service.”

St. Rose church buddies plan Mass

CUBA CITY — Recently, the fifth grade class at St. Rose School in Cuba City, along with their kindergarten church buddies, were in charge of the school Mass on a Friday.

They were able to plan the liturgy and also act out the Gospel story for that day.

The story they acted out was from Luke 19:45-48, the story of how Jesus cleanses the temple.
