Hurricanes damage Schoenstatt shrines

MADISON — On the evening of Friday, Aug. 24, to Saturday, Aug. 25, 18 Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary in Lamar, Texas, experienced the brunt of Hurricane Harvey, including the eye of the hurricane, as it crossed over their property.

Damage from Hurricane Harvey in Texas

The damage left in its wake was catastrophic. Just about every building on the campus was damaged. Some were destroyed, others lost part or all of the roof, most experienced extensive water damage. Even the Schoenstatt Shrine itself lost part of its roof.

Since then, volunteers and generous donors have been helping to clean up the debris, secure the buildings from further water damage, and supply food and other necessities to the Sisters.

Schoenstatt Movement in Madison opens Father Kentenich Year

MADISON — On September 15, 1968, Fr. Joseph Kentenich, founder of the International Schoenstatt Movement, was called into eternity immediately following Holy Mass in the Trinity Church on Mount Schoenstatt, Germany.

This castle-like church was built as a monument to thank the Mother Thrice Admirable, Queen, and Victress of Schoenstatt, for her protection during the years when Hitler was persecuting the Church in Germany. This was Father Kentenich’s first Holy Mass in this church, and it set a seal on his fruitful life’s work.

Schoenstatt Shrine has busy Year of Mercy

MADISON — It has been a busy year at the Schoenstatt Founder Shrine in Madison, primarily because the shrine was designated as a Door of Mercy during the Church’s Jubilee Year of Mercy.

During the Year of Mercy, the Diocese of Madison designated three Holy Doors. The other two sites are at the Cathedral Parish: St. Patrick Church and Holy Redeemer Church in Madison.

Place of pilgrimage

The doors provide a place of pilgrimage and they bear with them a plenary indulgence granted by Pope Francis.

The possibility for an indulgence comes under the usual conditions: a person must be in the state of grace, make a sacramental Confession, receive the Holy Eucharist, pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, and have the interior disposition of being detached from sin, including venial sin.

People have until November 20 to take advantage of this opportunity to pass through a Door of Mercy.

Busy year

According to Sr. M. Catherine Ditto, Schoenstatt Movement coordinator in the Diocese of Madison, “It has been a busy year at our shrine. About 550 people each month have visited the shrine from different parishes, schools, and organizations.”

Thanks for articles on Schoenstatt Movement

To reporter Kevin Wondrash:

On behalf of the Madison Schoenstatt Family, I want to thank you for the wonderful article you wrote about the 100 anniversary of the Covenant of Love.

You did an excellent job of capturing the atmosphere of the jubilee celebration, Bishop Morlino’s presence with us that day, and briefly summarizing our movement.
