Catholic schools teach children who they are

It seems these days that our culture is focused on the question of individual identity. Young people are searching to find out who they are.

They are yearning to define themselves in the world and to give their lives specific meaning. Whether it is the type of clothes they wear, the music they listen to, the food they eat, the company they keep, or their social media profile and postings on Facebook and Instagram, etc., everyone seems to be engaged in the tasking of forging a unique identity in the search to add meaning and significance to their life.

Searching for meaning

The question of the meaning of human existence is not new. People have been asking this ever since the dawn of time. “Who am I?” “What is the meaning of life?” “What is the meaning of my life?”

Monona school teaches love

MONONA — As the Paralympic Games are being held from March 9 to 18 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, students at Immaculate Heart of Mary School (IHM) in Monona heard from a former Paralympian.

The talk by Lloyd Bachrach, called “Yes, You Can!” was given during the school’s kick-off of its “Teach Love” campaign, which also included the students, faculty, and staff performing 10,000 acts of kindness around the school.

‘Yes, You Can!’

Bachrach, a motivational speaker and Paralympian who, while born with a congenital bone deficiency which left his legs unusually small, was able to overcome challenges, live out his dreams, and participate in sports at many levels, including the Paralympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 on the United States sitting volleyball team.

The Paralympic Games, both summer and winter, involve athletes with a range of disabilities. They are held almost immediately following the respective Olympic Games.

Sporting his artificial legs, Bachrach told the students, “I have a disability” and it “makes me a little bit different . . . I use a cane to help me walk.”

With the artificial legs, Bachrach is five-foot-eight inches tall. Without them, he is about three-foot-nine.

Bachrach said his talk would be about “the challenges I had when I was growing up, but also about the success that I’ve had.”

“You know that in life, we all have challenges,” he added, “we’re all trying to succeed at something.”

Monona students performing 10,000 acts of kindness

MONONA — Immaculate Heart of Mary School is teaching more than reading, writing, and arithmetic — it is teaching love.

The school recently launched its “Teach Love” campaign.

Principal Callie Meiller said Teach Love is a “showcase for students . . . not only preparing them academically; we want them to go out into the world and be ready, not only smarts wise, but ready mind, body, and spirit to take on the world.”

Lord Teach Me to Pray Facilitator Trainings offered through online courses

MADISON — Facilitator training for “Lord Teach Me to Pray Part One” (LTMTP) will be held March 7 and 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. each evening.

The Bishop O’Connor Catholic Center at 702 S. High Point Rd. will host this Skype-based training. Participants must attend both nights of the program to complete the course. There is no charge for the training.

Focuses on prayer

The series focuses on prayer and was developed to meet the desire of Catholics for ongoing spiritual growth in their response to the call to holiness and a deeper commitment to Jesus as Lord.

Parents play key role in sex education

While some parents might be happy to avoid the awkward conversations that arise around human sexuality by allowing the school system to provide their children’s sex education, it is nonetheless important for parents to recognize that they are the most significant teachers and models for their own children as they mature sexually.

Instilling a healthy attitude about sexuality in young people involves a variety of considerations, including conveying a proper sense of constraints and boundaries. These boundaries arise organically through the virtue of chastity, by which a person acquires the ability to renounce self, to make sacrifices, and to wait generously in consideration of loving fidelity toward a future spouse, out of self-respect, and out of fidelity to God.

Facilitator training retreat for Lord Teach Me to Pray series

BARABOO — The Midwest Facilitator Training Retreat for the Lord Teach Me to Pray (LTMTP) Series will be held Friday to Sunday, May 29 to 31, at Durward’s Glen Retreat and Conference Center.

Training for part one of LTMTP, Praying the Christian Virtues, will begin Friday night at 6:30 p.m. Mass and end Saturday at 3 p.m.

Training for part two of LTMTP, “My 19th Annotation,” will begin Saturday evening at 7 p.m. and end Sunday at 12 noon. There will be Mass on both Saturday and Sunday morning at 8 a.m. during the retreat.

Sister Mary James (Alice Margaret Mary) Geenen entered Eternal Life February 20, 2012, the third child of Henry R. Geenen and Gladys Catherine (McCormick) Geenen. She was born March 31, 1919 in Freedom. She attended Saint Nicholas Elementary School. After graduating from high school she attended Saint Norbert College and Silver Lake College where she earned a BA Degree in Elementary Education with majors in Philosophy and English. She attended the University of Dayton earning a MS Degree in Elementary Education.
