Brother Dutton did more to help Father Damien

On October 29, 2009
Robert Darling, Beloit

To the editor:

The story of Father Damien in the October 8 issue of the Catholic Herald was very timely coming just prior to his canonization on October 11. I wish to comment on the statement made relative to Joseph Dutton.

Brother Dutton did far more to help Father Damien and his work with the lepers than supervise the construction of the Baldwin Home in 1894.

Was it really necessary to say that he was a recovering alcoholic? Joseph Dutton had conquered that vice long before he met Father Damien in July 1886.

Robert Darling, Beloit
