Supporting members of the entire family

Ask Jean by Jean Mueller column logo

Q I am writing because I don’t know what to do about my brother.

He is in his 50s and lives with our mom who is well into her 70s. He is completely dependent on her for financial help.”Doug” has never been able to hold a job longer than a few months. He drinks heavily so I am not surprised that he can’t keep a job.

My mom feels sorry for him and states that he was never the same after he returned from military duty.

The issue is that if, or when, something happens to mom and she can no longer support him, I am not willing to pick up where she left off. I believe he is more capable than she thinks and I don’t want to become the next enabler.

Bruce Jenner and St. Irenaeus

Two news items from last week put me in mind of St. Irenaeus and the battle he waged, 19 centuries ago, against the Gnostic heresy.

The first was the emergence of Bruce Jenner as a “woman” named Caitlyn, and the second was a “shadow council” that took place in Rome and apparently called for the victory of a theology of love over John Paul II’s theology of the body.

Father’s Day reminds us of a father’s importance

Father’s Day was founded by Mrs. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd.

When Sonora was 16, her mother died while giving birth to Sonora’s youngest brother. With Sonora’s help, her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran, raised Sonora’s five brothers.

How will you answer the call?

Fonder Ponders column by Jackson Fonder

About five years ago, I left a wonderful job in corporate America to join the nonprofit sector and have not looked back.

I can’t tell you exactly what it was that compelled me to make such a drastic move. Over the years I had worked with many nonprofits, mostly as a volunteer, and loved the work and people involved. It just felt like it was the right thing to do. Almost like it was a calling.

Posture for Communion

To the editor:

The article “Reception of Holy Communion in the U.S.” (Catholic Herald, May 28) quotes “the danger of a loss of reverence for the august sacrament of the altar” with the reception of Communion while standing.

Historically, kneeling has been a gesture of submission to emperors and civil authorities. The Communion postures being advocated are the very ones Diocletian, the great Roman persecutor of Christians, decreed to increase the authority of the imperial office.

Judging who should live

To the editor:

I just read in the very last paragraph of an article in the June 2 Wisconsin State Journal, “Walker ready to sign 20-week abortion bill,” this statistic for 2013: “89 of 6,500 abortions were performed after 20 weeks.” A mere 89 little people were killed after 20 weeks and the rest were younger. No big deal!

It’s sickening to see the apathy of a once-great nation in regard to standards of living. Who are we to judge which is more important, the life of the child or of the mother?
