MADISON — The Diocese of Madison will join in a special collection for flood victims in Louisiana to be taken in parishes on the weekend of September 18.
The president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Ky., called on Catholic parishes across the U.S. to take a second collection on or around September 18. He encouraged U. S. Catholics “to respond generously. Our prayer and material support is urgently needed to help rebuild lives.”
Donations will go to support the humanitarian efforts of Catholic Charities USA, the Church’s domestic relief agency.Severe flooding has recently impacted the state of Louisiana with severe loss of life, property, and livelihoods. As many as 60,000 homes have been damaged, with nearly 20,000 people being rescued from the flood waters.
Catholic Charities and other agencies are responding to immediate emergency needs for such necessities as shelter, clean water, food, and medical care as well as to the long-term need to rebuild and recover after widespread destruction.
