Learning to make do with what we have

On a camping trip up north earlier this summer, I was cooking pancakes over the fire my husband built for our family of six.

Teens ‘surrender’ to faith and fun during Frassati Fest

This story could be all about water slides, but it isn’t.

Ask any teen who attends Frassati Fest every year. They will tell you one of the most memorable parts of the weekend is the water park, but there’s more — so much more.

‘Bridge of Spies’ and the path to virtue

My great mentor Msgr. Robert Sokolowski told a class of eager philosophy students many years ago that we should read Aristotle’s Nichomachean Ethics every year of our lives. As we grew older, he explained, new dimensions of the book would continually present themselves.

I can’t say that I’ve followed Sokolowski’s advice perfectly, but I have indeed returned often to Aristotle’s great text for inspiration and clarification.

Be compassionate

Cutting Edge by Sr. Margie Lavonis column logo

We have a loving and compassionate God, and Jesus calls us to practice these virtues in our lives. This is our mission as Christians.

When I was growing up, we learned the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. They are tools for living a good Christian life, showing us how to be compassionate.

Corporal Works of Mercy

Jesus tells us about the Corporal Works of Mercy in Chapter 25 of the Gospel of Matthew. He challenges us to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the imprisoned, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, and bury the dead. We will be judged by how we do these things.

At first glance, we might think that we are rarely presented with opportunities to exercise many of these good works. But, if we look a little closer, we might be surprised at how often we are presented with ways to do some of them.

Teens encouraged to live ‘God’s dream’

MIDDLETON — The sights and sounds of “panda ball” and mozzarella sticks fresh out of the oven meant it was time to start another year of Cardinal Virtue.

Cardinal Virtue is a Catholic youth apostolate that aims to engage high school students in the Middleton and Cross Plains areas.

The group recently held its kick-off event at St. Bernard Church in Middleton.

Teens from four parishes come together to experience ‘virtue’ in Middleton

MIDDLETON — There’s a welcome sight once a week at the 8:15 a.m. daily Mass at St. Bernard Church in Middleton.

About 15 to 20 Middleton High School students take advantage of a late-start day to go to Mass and have breakfast together.

It’s one of many activities in the Cardinal Virtue youth apostolate for high school students in the Middleton area. It’s a joint effort by four parishes: St. Bernard in Middleton, St. Francis Xavier in Cross Plains, St. Peter in Ashton, and St. Martin of Tours in Martinsville.
