Catholic Library Association holds conference

On October 9, 2014
Kevin Wondrash

WISCONSIN DELLS — The Wisconsin Chapter of Catholic Library Association (WCLA) will hold its annual fall conference on Friday, Oct. 18, in Wisconsin Dells.

The chapter was originally formed in Milwaukee to encourage development in the fields of Catholic literature and Catholic library work and has grown in size to include school librarians, technology directors, paraprofessionals, educators, principals, religious education directors, parish librarians, and volunteers interested in media related to education, library, and technology from all parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois as members.

The annual conference provides an opportunity for discussion, camaraderie, and prayer with peers. All elementary, middle, and high school librarians, as well as those from universities and colleges, public and parish libraries are welcome.

The group will meet at the Wintergreen Resort and Conference Center in Wisconsin Dells from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Conference program

This year’s conference features Merri Lindgren from the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) sharing the newest children’s and young adult literature of 2014 and a presentation by Kaye Henricksen from CESA #4 on flipped learning.

Merri Lindgren, a librarian at CCBC in the Department of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will present on best books of 2014 from 9 to 10:15 on newly published books recommended for children and young adults by the CCBC. Attendees will receive a free copy of CCBC Choices 2014 for more title selections.

Kaye Henricksen is the educational technology and digital literacy director from CESA #4 Onalaska. She will do a presentation on Flipped Learning from 1 to 3 p.m.

Flipped learning is a model of teaching where students are instructed with new subject content online through a video. Homework or assignments are done in class with teacher guidance and interaction.

Participants will walk away with ideas and some basic digital tools to create flipped content for students attending a regular classroom environment or evening/weekend environment focusing on sacramental and religious education. Bring your own device (iPads, laptops, notebooks) for this session.

There will be a small breakout session for groups of attendees by specialty for the opportunity to discuss common practices and learn from each other. Shopping breaks will also be done with vendors By the Cross and Book Look.

Registration information

Continental breakfast, lunch, door prizes, time for networking, and a WCLA membership are included in the $60 registration fee.

For more information on the conference and registration details or how to obtain membership, go to sites.google.com/site/wclaannualconference/ or contact Deb at [email protected] or at home phone 608-788-2655.

Preregistrations are due October 10. Registration is also available at the door for $70.
