Statue of Our Lady visits diocese

We living in the Diocese of Madison have a unique opportunity to view the world-famous International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima.

The statue will be visiting four cities in our diocese (see schedule) and will be displayed outside the Planned Parenthood clinic in Madison on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 3 p.m.

I did some research on this statue, and it has a remarkable story.

Vigil for Life to respond peacefully in vigil outside abortion ‘celebration’

MADISON — Pro-abortion groups across the country — including NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin and other local pro-abortion groups — will be celebrating abortion with a star-studded All Access evening of “music, comedy, and entertainment” on Saturday, Sept. 10.

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin, Wisconsin Women’s Network, and the Women’s Medical Fund will host a live-streaming of the main event in Cleveland, Ohio, at Steenbock’s On Orchard, 330 N. Orchard St., in downtown Madison.

40 Days for Life campaign kicks off September 28

MADISON — The 40 Days for Life campaign, a peaceful, non-denominational initiative that focuses on 40 days of prayer and fasting, peaceful vigils at abortion facilities, and grassroots educational outreach, kicks off on September 28.

“We know 40 Days for Life has made a difference in Madison. Our volunteers have made extraordinary sacrifices to expose the abortion industry and to protect children and their mothers from abortion,” said Gwen Finnegan, who is coordinating the local campaign this year.

Gun proponents offer similar arguments as abortion lobby

To the editor:

I was proud of Mary Uhler’s stance that we should work for stronger gun control.

Last week’s Mailbag had two letters refuting gun control positions. I would guess that both men are strong in their faith and I would guess that neither supports abortion. But both letters troubled me in that they reminded me of the abortion lobby’s arguments.

Right to bear arms rooted in Constitution; abortion is not

To the editor:

Mary Uhler and Monica Simpson fail to understand that the cities today with the strictest gun control (Chicago and Washington, D.C.) have the highest rate of crime. Wyatt  Earp displayed, in the city of Tombstone, Ariz., “No guns allowed within city limits”. He and his family reaped grave consequences for enforcing those restrictions.

The right to bear arms is rooted in the Constitution for a reason. We the people must be protected from government tyranny. Legal gun use has to be the peoples’ protection. Gun restriction laws are simply ignored by those who intend to break the law.

Shocked out of complacency: Abortions only at Planned Parenthood

Guest Column

I must make an embarrassing confession: I am a complacent pro-lifer.

I never thought of myself this way, but it is true. And I have proof.

Abortions only

Beginning May 2, 2016, the Planned Parenthood abortion facility on Madison’s east side began providing only abortion services; it will no longer provide screenings or dispense contraceptives.

No one is beyond conversion

These days it seems as if people fall into opposing camps on many issues. Abortion is certainly one of the most divisive issues in our society.

But people can change their minds on issues, even polarizing ones like abortion.

Someone who exemplifies the possibility of change is Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood Clinic director. Johnson — whom I’ve heard speak — is now a powerful advocate for the pro-life side of the spectrum.

Easter Triduum 40 Hours for Life vigil to end abortion

MADISON — There’s no time like the days of the Easter Triduum to venture to the sidewalk to pray for women and men contemplating abortion, that they might choose life.

As we ponder Christ’s crucifixion and death at Calvary on Good Friday, it is appropriate to remember that Christ died for all our sins, including the sin of abortion committed by so many in our country.

New laws cut state Planned Parenthood funding

WAUKESHA — Governor Scott Walker signed two bills into law February 18 that, together, are expected to eliminate approximately $8 million in public funding from Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin (PPWI), the state’s largest abortion provider.

Assembly Bill 310 redirects federal Title X family planning funds away from organizations that perform abortions to public entities including state, county, and local health departments and clinics. This will eliminate $3.5 million from PPWI.

Doritos commercial gives positive message

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

This year I didn’t care which team won the Super Bowl. So while I did watch most of the football game, I perhaps paid more attention to the commercials.

One of the commercials that caught my eye was one for Doritos. It featured a pregnant woman having a sonogram in a hospital. The screen showed a picture of the baby inside her womb.

The father of the baby was eating Doritos. The baby’s arms started to move towards a chip and the baby actually came out of the womb to get his own chip.
